After a year's apprenticeship, which included lots of Reiki practice, Alec and I both became a Reiki Masters in November 1991. We taught our first class the following month and continued teaching together until Alec decided to stop teaching Reiki to concentrate on his taiji teaching. I continued teaching on my own have been teaching regularly ever since!
I teach and practice a form of Reiki known as Usui Shiki Ryoho in the Spiritual Lineage Usui, Hayashi, Takata, Furumoto, Reindl.
I attended the inaugural meeting of The Reiki Association in 1991 and from 1992 to 2004 I worked as their Administrator. I saw it grow from a small group of 200 practitioners to an community of 1,000 members. Being so involved with the Reiki community, both in the UK and internationally, through this job gave me wonderful opportunities to learn more about the practice of Reiki in all its forms. In 2004 I left the job because I realised that I was not at peace in my work/life balance and needed more time to devote to my Reiki practice. This gave me time to develop my Reiki practice and gain more experience in giving treatments.
I continued to be involved with The Reiki Association, including representing them in helping to develop National Occupational Standards for professional Reiki practitioners. I represented The Reiki Association on the Reiki Regulatory Working Group (RRWG), which became Reiki Council, until June 2007, when I changed places to represent the Reiki Alliance instead. I was a member of the Deepening Practice Network team, a voluntary group which is part of The Reiki Association and organises events to support Reiki practitioners. I also served on the Reiki Association Council for 5 years and Reiki Association Webinars team for 3 years.
It is my wish that people's first experience of Reiki is a good one. This means people being able to find a reliable practitioner who is confident, competent and supported in what they do.
This comes from my early experiences as a Reiki practitioner and also my belief that Reiki is enough on its own. I do not mean that Reiki should not be used alongside other treatments - it is often very good for supporting conventional treatments. What I mean is that I want to see the true value and potential for Reiki understood and valued. I have great faith in Reiki's ability to improve people's well being, whatever problem they are facing in their life.
As well as being my work, Reiki is my spiritual practice. I am guided by the Reiki principles and Reiki philosophy in my daily life. I have now had the honour of teaching Reiki to over 1,000 people and have enjoyed teaching Reiki more as each year passes and my understanding and experience deepens.
After a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes in 2014 I learned about various mistakes I was making in my diet and lifestyle. With the help of Reiki I was able to reduce my blood glucose levels to being pre-diabetic. You can read more about this journey on my nutrition coaching website here. This sparked an interest in how blood glucose/sugar balance can be achieved and maintained.
I had often heard that Hawayo Takata gave nutrition advice alongside Reiki treatments, so had wondered for some time about learning more about nutrition. I had come across a school called Sano at the Integrative Health Convention in 2019 whose approach I resonated with.
During the Covid pandemic, while I was unable to offer in-person Reiki sessions or classes, I decided to explore nutrition further and joined the Sano Nutrition Coach course. This led to qualifying with a diploma in applied nutrition in early 2022 and a new way to support people as a nutrition coach. I had been thinking of a method for sharing what I discovered about bringing down high blood sugar and so CRANES was born! You can find our more here: https://www.craneswellbeing.co.uk/
I am a member of the Reiki Alliance and helped to organise the first Reiki Alliance Conference in the UK in 2019.
I been a representative for both The Reiki Association and Reiki Alliance at Reiki Council meetings over the years.
I led the team that developed the Reiki Core Curriculum based on the UK National Occupational Standards (which I also participated in developing).
I'm currently serving on the Reiki for Animals sub-group.
PSB stands for Profession Specific Board, a group of people who advise CNHC on issues relating to the profession. I was first elected in 2010 and re-elected twice. My service is now ongoing in this role (elections are no longer held) Work on this group has included developing the CNHC Core Curriculum for Reiki.
I have served on the Executive Director Group and was a volunteer on the Akademia team.
CONNECTING REIKI WITH MEDICINE
I have been very interested to see the development of this wonderful project based at St George's hospital in London. Started by my friend and former colleague on Reiki Association Council Feona Gray, Connecting Reiki with Medicine has enable Reiki practitioners to work on critical care wards in an integrative way - potentially a model for other hospitals in the UK and even world wide!
